My Own Story
Like many people, for various health and personal reasons, I let myself get badly out of shape. How bad, you ask? So bad that when I finally decided to start doing something about it 3 years ago, I got tired just walking a mile at Blue Rock park. I had zero muscle tone. When I flexed my calves, they were still flabby.
I started by jogging 1/10th of a mile, walking when I got out of breathe, and then jogging for another 1/10th. It didn’t take long to build up endurance this way and I can still remember my pride when I ran that half mile loop without stopping! I continued to improve until I could jog 3 miles. It felt great to be able to do that.
But there were two problems. First, around November, it got too cold for me to run. I tried the treadmill, but I found it boring and it was too easy to find a reason to get off and do something else. Second, I was building stamina and felt a lot better, but I wasn’t losing any weight. I wanted all this hard work I was doing to show!
I tried diets, with some success, but I still wasn’t getting the results I hoped for. Then, we decided to start a Cardio-Kickboxing program at Nishime Family Karate. One thing I did NOT want was to be tied to a long, boring 45-50 minutes of straight kicking and punching. So, I talked to Sensei Ben Nishime, and he helped me create a program that combined “traditional” cardio-kickboxing with circuit training and his Bikini Bootcamp interval training.
This new, improved Cardio-Kickboxing class includes strength-training exercises, cardio exercise, stretching, and abdominal exercises in every session. The class is divided into sections with each part lasting no more then 10-15 minutes before we move on to something different. Each week I introduce new challenges and exercises to always keep it fresh.
And the results? I’ve developed muscle tone and strength and improved my stamina exponentially. I’m way healthier and haven't had a bad cold since I started (I used to catch everything that came along.) And I have the energy to do pretty much anything I want to do.
Between you and me, though, I have to admit...as important and healthy as those benefits are... the very best part of cardio-kickboxing for me is that everyone who knew me before I started has told me how good I look now. The hard work is finally visible! Even my stepson told his dad that “Mary Beth doesn’t look like an old lady anymore,” which is probably the best compliment I’ve ever gotten (and the only one I’ve gotten from him).
